Being Asian...
If I was in an anime, there would be a thud, as an arrow strikes my heart and my eyes turn into white flat circles with thick black outlines.

I know that Asians can be very annoying. Many of us are stingy, fussy and repulsively materialistic. Instead of smiling, we frown, squint and talk behind people's back. We are in someone else's country, yet still are arrogant enough to not want to associate with people of other cultures, choosing to instead band together on the night street with unmuffled sports cars. We are not fluent in English, struggle to pass our school subjects, yet still fussily demand many things, wanting to do things the way we are used to.

I realize that. Generalization or not, there is no wonder why Asians are being despised!!

I am ashamed. To me it is almost like Sanballat saying - to a population who were well aware that their city walls had fallen, and its gates burned with fire - "What are those feeble Jews doing?" (Nehemiah 4).

"There are too many Asians in the country. I think the government is being too lenient," she said. "I would like New Zealand to be kept just for New Zealanders."

Quickly the radio host interrupted the lady who called, replying her along the lines of "Nothing against Asians, but I can see your point". He quickly put down the phone and tried to change topic.

If I was in an anime, there would be a thud, as an arrow strikes my heart and my eyes turn into white flat circles with thick black outlines.

And probably worse yet, I hear Asians talking about New Zealanders as well. I wish I could just shut my ears off to all of these...

( p.s. Just to clarify, what I intend to convey in this post is not about racism per se! In fact, I really enjoy being in NZ, and the many Kiwis I have met have been absolutely wonderful towards me! )

wow. that is deep.

but i have to disagree with the second paragraph. I do not live in New Zealand. I live in America. But your words speak thruth when you say that asians like to stick together. i think that's a perfectly normal reaction.

the key is not to alienate other cultures.

I felt you were rather harsh to your race.

does new zealand have racisim towards asians? in america, its mostly aimed at blacks.

the news anchor people, dang. if that happened in america, the news anchor person would be fired. they would have a replacement the next day.

its like saying 'i would like america to be kept just for americans'. yeah. good luck. you can bitch and whine all you want, but that isn't going to change anything. and its for the better too.

the world is getting smaller and i love it! ^_^

wow thanks for commenting!

just to clarify, the "radio guy" didn't make that comment. it was someone who called the radio station who said those things (it was a radio programme where people could call in and voice their opinions), and the radio guy tried to end the conversation immediately by saying "Nothing against Asians, but I can see your point", then putting down the phone.

and sorry to sound misleading, but i have so far (5 years here) found new zealand to be a splendid place, and my experience is that almost all new zealanders are wonderful towards asians. of course, there are a few who put on sour faces, but you're right, it's foolish to get bothered by them =)

what i was trying to convey was just how easy it is to generalize and judge, hahah. and also to convey that we as "asians overseas" have many flaws to work on too.

is racism towards blacks still going on in the States? i thought it's pretty much gone by now... but anyways, i really appreciate your input!

yeah, there is still undertones of racism in the states. things like more black people get arrested than white, more black people get excecuted than white, so on so on. its so easy to separate the blacks because of their skin. its ridiculous. we even have commercials saying to speak up if you see someone being racist! (they are very good commercials). ^_^

i've asked around about New Zealand, and I've only hear good things. Now I really want to travel over there! :)

and i'm sorry for misunderstading some of your comments. ^_^

interestin2c u post about racial issues!
i do agree tat AZNs like to limit their social circle. i think there's so many reasons i do so.

it's so true tat the way tat some AZNs behave is a disgrace to our name. I don't blame the Kiwis for hating us, for many of us (like me!yikes!) still live like we're in our own country --being inconsiderate; ignoring ppl (eg. not answerin to the friendly greetings of a cashier/shopkeeper); speaking in our own language in front of them....
I think Azns (not excludin moi) should try to learn 'in Rome do as the Romans'.

But it is sad for me tat the word "asian" is quite an ugly word in nz (is it?).

However, prejudice will always be happenin among mankind. From wat i learnt in psych, as long as there are two groups, even when each gp's members are strangers & share nth in common, they will still be antagonist towards the other gp (also which they dont know wat kind of gp it was).
of cos, if ppl are grouped based on their skin color, identity or other similarites or goal, prejudice feelings will be magnified.

ohya, wat are u ashamed bout? being an Azn? or ashamed of the locals? din realy get ur msg!

PS> aiyo,,,u not comin 2 DND this weekend...:(

yea, one of the things i've learned this year is that it really takes a conscious effort to step out of our comfort zones, to try to mix with Kiwis or other cultures. And I think they like it.

I guess my post was more about how easy it is to generalize and form prejudice (not that it's anyth new), than it is about racism... :)

yea, sorry, after thinking for sometime, i decided not to go down to Dnd. I really wish i could, but i guess it'd be too much of a rush and exhaustion for me... Sorry once again!!

wow. in the us, at least where i live, there is some of that, but it's mostly toward hispanics and illegal immigrants. the most racism i've ever encountered was just stereotypes. there've been things like that tsunami song on the hot97 radio station in ny, but my experience here's been pretty good. d^__^b

it sucks that people don't get along. most of my friends are asian, but i don't do that on purpose. i'm proud to be asian, but i try not to limit my social life to them--i just seem to have more in common with them ^__^ but honestly, people should get along :D

i gotta say, i love reading your entries. they're so thoughtful and honest. ^__^

indeed! it sucks big time that people don't get along. i'm sure it makes our heavenly Father sad!

i'd just like to reiterate that almost all of the Kiwis i've met have been wonderful to me, so that you don't get the wrong impression, haha...

and thanks so~ much for the compliments! i'm certainly less morose now ^^

(eaves dropped after seein u on anime_art and deviantart)

I remember when I went last summer, there were like 95% Asians there. It just seemed a bit one sided to me...

In a way, it does kinda remind me of US (like kawaiiviolinist said) but with different races. In a way, it's kinda like that with Blacks and Whites 9it shouldnt be, but deep down, it still is in a small percent that kinda look over the shoulder. I still do, but that's only knowing that there's still that kind of behavior going on.

Man, I don't know what else to say, but I had to respond with something...

hey thanks for commenting, and don't consider yourself eavesdropping!

i'm sorry but i didn't really understand some of what you said.
when you said "seemed a bit one sided"... what did you mean?

what do you mean by "look over the shoulder"? as in have prejudice?

sorry for being a little thick-headed... =_=

hey, thick-headed is fine. It's how I am half the time.

I only meant one sided because there were a LOT of Asians there when I was there.

And the "look over the shoulder" thing was just about the whole paranoia. Apparently, racism is supposed to be over, but there are still some people that hold the ideas of other races being inferior or pig-headed or something like that.

Hope that helps.
